Asefa Estudiantes felt the absence of fresh air at very sound FIATC Joventut court. Corey Fisher was far more resolutive than schoolboys’ Carl English and it was too much for a visitor squad like us at the frozen Olimpic arena.
It is regarded as one of the coldest and most analytic basket court. The Palau Olimpic at Badalona contains a blend of connaiseurs and the youngsters but the 5.149 attendance had moments of real joy. Partly because Asefa Estu arrived too tired to the third game of the week, as coach Txus Vidorreta would later recognise.
Well before first quarter ended you could perceive it. Asefa Estudiantes delayed the warming up and defensive skills allowed black and green boys to sustain a high-scoring tempo. Not surprising to see again a 27-24 score for first period.
Visitors tried a variety of pre-Christmas cooking and stuffing but the local poultry was a rough-tackling beast. Only center German Gabriel sustained the scoring at Asefa Estudiantes will eficiency because there was no much help from Carl English (1/10 2p and 2/7 3p average).
In the meantime, FIATC Joventut played comfortably and hafltime arrived with a +10 (45-35). It was enlarged due to the expertise of Corey Fisher and Tony Gaffney and third quarter ended with a clear difference in the breathing of both teams (67-54).
An exhausted squad tried to grasp a lucky streak. PF Daniel Clark clutched two long-distance three pointers and Jayson Granger squeezed his physical moment to the very last drop. Lucas Nogueira started to bang the local rim but it was too late. Local boys were into a winning mood and the start of the game Corey Fisher killed any chance of reaction.
Christmas break leads to regain fuel now. Next stop is the coastal springtime at UCAM Murcia. Some fellows still remember lat season’s game. That perception is to be changed.
